Darius:
Last week, I had a man-date marathon with two of my friends. We watched green book in Shatin Movie Town. We watched Green Book because we wanted a movie with depth. Let me introduce the plot first. The film is inspired by the story of African-American pianist Dr Shirley and Italian-American driver Tony Lip. Dr Shirley hired Tony for his eight-week concert tour through the peep South which is racism at that time. Dr Shirley’s recorded label gave tony a copy of the Green Book, a guide for black traveler to find motels, restaurants that would served black that what the name of the film came from.
Edison:
In this film, the African-American pianist, Dr Shirley had a difficult situation. Despite its superb piano skill, the strong racism in the United States at the time. He couldn’t change the characteristic of his dark skin and he was treated differently in real life. It was impossible for him to think that his success could be able to keep peace with the whites.
Collison:
In the movie, I like Dr Shirley’s choice of words. He was highly educated. For example, he wanted to tell his friends he didn’t understand him. Instead of saying ‘you don’t understand me’, he said ‘you have a very narrow assessment of me Tony’, such language pattern could not be learned in the textbook. And, there are many good quotes in this movie. Dr Shirley said ‘you never win with violence. You only win when you maintain your dignity. Watching movie is the best way to learn English.

Jason
Happy new year James! Welcome to the year of the pig!

James
What? Did you just call me a pig?!
Jason
No No, I said it’s the “year of the pig” 2019 is the Chinese year of the Pig
James
Oh yes, I know what you mean now. Chinese New Year has a lot of traditions and unique aspects that we can all experience
Jason
That’s right! For instance, family members will exchange red pockets that are full of money.
James
Yes. That’s my favorite part of Chinese New Year, its better than winning the mark 6!
Jason
That’s true! I was very grateful for all the red pockets I received. What else did you do during the new year?
James
Well, I spent a lot of time with my family and relatives. Its important to spend Chinese year with your family as it’s an important tradition.
Jason
That’s correct. Many families will travel back to their country of origin, which is the country their ancestors came from.
James
Yes, many families travel back to mainland china during the holiday to see their grandparents, aunties and uncles. We also eat special traditional food during this holiday. Can you think of any examples?
Jason
Hmm, well, there are lots of examples. But, my favorite is a dessert called gok jai which is a delicious cake filled with coconuts and peanuts
James
That sounds delicious Jason. So happy new year to everyone in BWWTC. We hope you have a year of good fortune and success starting with todays English speaking day.
